Frequently Asked Questions About Scholarships

Have questions about scholarships, financial aid, or funding your education? Our team has compiled answers to help you get started.
How do I know if a scholarship opportunity is legitimate or a scam?
Legitimate scholarships never charge application fees. Be cautious with personal information requests. If something seems suspicious, contact our Youth & College Support Team for guidance before proceeding.
Can I apply for scholarships if I'm a returning adult student?
Absolutely. The 3Rivers scholarship contest welcomes returning adult students. Indiana also offers the Adult Student Grant specifically for students who are starting or completing their degrees later in life.
What is the FAFSA and why is it important for scholarships?
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid determines eligibility for federal, state, and institutional aid. Many scholarships require FAFSA completion. Indiana students should file by April 15 annually.
Do I need to attend an Indiana college to receive these scholarships?
Requirements vary by scholarship. State programs like the 21st Century Scholarship require attendance at eligible Indiana institutions. However, some scholarships, including the 3Rivers scholarship, have different requirements.
How can 3Rivers help me find scholarship funding?
Our Youth & College Support Team provides personalized guidance on scholarship searches, FAFSA completion, and creating comprehensive college funding strategies. Contact us at college@trfcu.org to get started.
When should I start applying for college scholarships?
Begin researching scholarships during your junior year of high school. Most applications open in fall with deadlines between December and March. Starting early gives you adequate time to craft compelling applications.
What's the difference between scholarships, grants, and student loans?
Scholarships and grants are gift aid you don't repay. Student loans must be repaid with interest. Always maximize scholarships and grants before considering loans to minimize your total education debt.
