Health Savings Account FAQs

Have questions about how your HSA works? We've got answers. For additional support, reach out to our team.
What is a Health Savings Account?
A Health Savings Account is a triple tax-advantaged account for individuals covered by high-deductible health plans (HDHPs). At 3Rivers, your HSA comes as a checking account with money market dividends. Contributions are tax-deductible, funds grow tax-deferred, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are tax-free.
Am I eligible to open a 3Rivers HSA?
To qualify, you must be enrolled in a high-deductible health plan (HDHP), have no other comprehensive health coverage, not be enrolled in Medicare or TRICARE, and not be claimed as a dependent. Visit the IRS website, IRS.gov Publication 502, for more information
What qualifies as a medical expense?
Qualified expenses include doctor visits, copays, deductibles, prescriptions, dental care, vision care, mental health services, and medical equipment. For a complete IRS list, visit IRS.gov Publication 502. Keep receipts.
Do my funds roll over year to year?
Yes! Unused funds roll over indefinitely. There's no "use it or lose it" requirement like FSAs. Your money grows tax-deferred and earns dividends. This makes HSAs ideal for long-term healthcare savings and retirement planning.
How do I access my 3Rivers HSA funds?
Multiple options: Use your Mastercard® HSA debit card for direct purchases, transfer funds via online banking, use mobile app, write checks, withdraw from 35,000+ surcharge-free ATMs, or visit any 3Rivers branch. Access your funds anytime with no fees.
